About/FAQ

Hello, and welcome to the Great Books Forum blog!

About: This little project started out of my selfish desire to re-read and discuss the books of the Great Books curriculum with my friends. Since I didn't want to put any extra pressure on people's already  busy schedules, I created this blog to serve as an online forum for discussion.

How it Works: We will read one book at a time on a reading schedule designed to be forgiving of other commitments (I have a real life too, after all :) ). Before the start of each book, either myself or a guest blogger will post an introduction to, and background information for, each book. Each week on Friday there will be a post designed to open discussions about that week's reading. Discussions will take place in the comments, until I can come up with a better method.

Keeping Up: The beauty of hosting these discussions online is that the posts will remain up and open for comments indefinitely. Consequently, you can read at your own pace and join the discussions when you're ready. Since I imagine many of you will want to try to stay on pace, there will be a two week grace period between each book so anyone who fell behind can catch up.

IRL: Nothing, in my opinion, can replace face to face discussions. So, I encourage people to meet up and discuss the books in person, if possible. I also hope to add some features like live chat at some point so this can be possible.

Jumping In: New here? Missed a few books? Or maybe just not interested in reading the book we're currently discussing? Not a problem. Just jump in and start reading whenever you want to. Or start at the beginning and read through the archives. It's up to you.

Time  Line: As I said above, I'm planning to use a very forgiving reading schedule. At a university, the Great Books program takes four years to complete. So we're going to be here for a while. There is certainly no pressure to make a four year commitment to this read-a-long. Join when you can, and read what interests you.

Guest Bloggers: Is there a book, author, or section in a book you love and/or have unique/expert knowledge about? Contact me about writing a post!

Where are the FAQ'S?: I realize there is not actually a FAQ section on this page. The reason is quite simple...no one has asked any questions yet! If you have a question, please ask it in the comments, and I will answer it and start a list.
